Book Reviews: Science and Sex

Welcome to Day 1 of our SexPlus Week Book Reviews!

Each day for SexPlus Week, we’ll be diving into a new theme and sharing book recommendations that explore different aspects of sexuality. Today, we’re starting with Science and Sex— learning about sex doesn’t need to be like your old high school sex ed class. It can be enlightening, fun and engaging. These books will provide a valuable insight into better understanding our bodies, relationships and desires.

Bonk by Mary Roach

“This book took scientific research and academia and made it hilarious and accessible to anyone. Mary Roach has an infectious curiosity- and she’s willing to go the distance to get her questions answered! Her study of sex research has led her to places that many of us might not be willing to go (I’m looking at you, having sex in an MRI machine). This book is a must for anyone who is interested in sex research and the history of human sexuality”

The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter

The Vagina Bible is a thoughtful, witty and well-researched book by the well-loved OBGYN Dr. Jen Gunter, that aims to dismantle the common misconceptions that popular culture feeds to those with vaginas/vulvas. She systematically discusses a variety of concerns that those with vaginas/vulvas have (think birth control, infections, menstruation, sex, hygiene etc) and gives her sound medical perspective on these issues, while simultaneously rejecting the myths that society has fed to us since the beginning of time. While this book is dense with information, it will open your eyes to all misinformation surrounding sexual and reproductive health and will encourage you to think more critically about the information we receive, whether you have a vagina or not!”

Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski

Come as You Are is an exploration of sexuality, challenging sexual health myths and replacing them with evidence based insights. Emily Nagoski uses humor and science to empower people to take charge of their own bodies and desires. This book takes a feminist approach to pleasure and sexual wellbeing and, although mainly aimed at cisgender women, offers insight that can benefit anyone.”

Better Sex Through Mindfulness by Dr. Lori Brotto

“This book is an amazing research-driven guide to understanding sexual desire, arousal, and pleasure through the practice of mindfulness. Dr. Brotto is a psychologist who specializes in sexual well-being and she shares her insight into the relationship between the brain and the body. Dr. Brotto uses a sex-positive tone and provides case studies, exercises, actionable solutions, and guided meditations to improve sexual satisfaction”

Hopefully, this gives you a few things to add to your ‘Must Reads’ list. If not, come back tomorrow for our next set of book reviews under a new theme.
